E.Leclerc will introduce mobile payment solution Wero

E.Leclerc, France’s largest grocery retailer, is set to introduce the mobile payment solution Wero across its Drive click-and-collect operations from the second quarter of 2026, according to trade magazine Points de Vente.

At E.Leclerc Drive sites, shoppers will be able to make instant payments either through their existing banking applications featuring Wero, or via the dedicated Wero app. Confirming the move, Denis Dargelos, Director of Infomil, E.Leclerc’s IT subsidiary, stated that his teams “will actively participate in the implementation of the Wero payment method on the E.Leclerc Drive website.”

Wero is operated by the European Payments Initiative (EPI), a consortium founded by 16 banks and financial service providers. The platform aims to establish a unified European digital payments ecosystem, positioning itself as a cost-effective and strategically independent alternative to global payment networks such as Visa, Mastercard or PayPal.

Wero plans to integrate loyalty and pay-later options

According to the EPI, 40 million consumers across Belgium, France and Germany have already installed the Wero app.  Wero is primarily known as a peer-to-peer digital wallet enabling account-to-account instant transfers. The payment solution is progressively introducing new features such as e-commerce and in-store transactions, while also supporting value-added services such as loyalty integration or buy-now-pay-later options.

Wero is currently following a roadmap which includes a wider roll-out of its solution into physical stores and e-commerce channels over the upcoming quarters. Commenting on E.Leclerc’s involvement, David Huet, President of E.Leclerc’s financial services arm Banque Edel, stresses that “Integrating Wero paves the way for new payment practices that are more direct, more agile, and deliver value for both customers and retailers.”
