Last week, Rewe Group launched a new distribution centre in Magdeburg Rothensee with automation technology from Kuka subsidiary Swisslog. Up to now, the retail group has mainly relied on Witron for the automation of distribution centres, whose automation technology largely operates without robotics.

Rewe Group is further expanding its tests of Pick&Go technology. In the Romanian capital Bucharest, the retailer opened the first store from its discount operation Penny to use Trigo technology.

Edeka independent retailer Pascal Gerdes is piloting the new Tomra R2 multi-feed reverse vending machine. His Trinkgut beverage store in Moers is the first in Germany to deploy the compact, wall-mounted machine. In future, it will also be able to accept returnable glass containers.

Edeka's Netto has automated the picking of produce crates at another distribution centre using technology from Finnish intralogistics specialist Cimcorp. The storage and picking system enables efficient storage and retrieval of crates, optimises the use of available space and reduces manual handling.

Rewe Digital is evaluating the use of hyper-realistic avatars in employee communication in a pilot project called Knowledge Avatar. Test avatar 'goRobert' helps with the onboarding of new employees at the Rewe IT subsidiary. The hologram technology from US provider Proto is supplied by the event agency Pave.

Rewe Group's Billa has equipped all of its approximately 160 stores in Bulgaria with electronic shelf labels (ESLs) from VusionGroup. In Bulgaria, Billa has installed the ESLs on rails from HL Display with the help of Display Bulgaria.

Equipped with a new version of Trigo's technology, the Rewe Pick&Go store in Düsseldorf allows customers to shop scanless without registering. However, the store's second major innovation, the automatic weighing of fruit and vegetables as they are picked, was out of action this week.

At the Rewe Center in Cologne-Bickendorf of independent merchants Daniel and Boris Dugandzic, Rewe Digital has installed special tablet computers on around half of all 220 shopping trolleys to guide customers through the store. However, the devices are currently not used for self-scanning, for which customers still have to use the Zebra devices or their own smartphone.
