Bartels-Langness implements smart trolley with Shopreme

North German retail company Bartels-Langness, or Bela for short, has joined forces with Shopreme and IT Media Consult AG to develop an intelligent shopping cart that will be introduced in Famila Nordost stores in the coming weeks. The Snap Cart enables the retailer to convert existing shopping carts into smart carts in a few simple steps and with a low investment. The software developed for the Snap Cart is part of Shopreme’s Unified Self-Checkout Platform.

Developed in collaboration with Bartels-Langness IT, Shopreme and IT Media Consult AG, the intelligent trolleys are designed to complement Bela’s existing self-scanning system using handheld scanners. The system uses the existing shopping trolleys. For this solution, they are equipped with a removable tablet PC and a special magnetic holder. A detachable Bluetooth scanner makes it easier to register the items. A camera aimed at the trolley supports the scanning control with AI technology.

The tablet PC displays personalised promotional content and detailed product information while shopping and charging. In addition, ESL tags in the holder turn the cart into a digital touchpoint even when the shopper is not using a tablet. The digital tags deliver relevant advertising content to the customer in real time. Both the advertising and the hardware can be managed through the Shopreme Management Console. The software provides detailed information about the life cycle of hardware, the success of campaigns, insights into customer behaviour at self-checkout and store efficiency. Famila can optimise its product range and processes using the anonymised data.

Cost-effective self-scanning solution with retail media integration

“We have tailored the Snap Cart to Famila’s needs, incorporating features such as retail media to increase customer loyalty and satisfaction while providing a flexible, user-friendly shopping experience,” says Florian Burgstaller, CEO of Shopreme. Using the Famila app, customers can retrieve a device from the charging station themselves. All they have to do is scan the QR code from the app. They can then scan and store all the items they want to purchase. The tablet holder also offers the option of charging a smartphone while shopping. Once all the products have been scanned, the purchase can be completed using a QR code at a self-checkout terminal or at a conventional checkout using the preferred payment method. Finally, the used tablet is snapped back into the charging station.

With the introduction of the Snap Cart at Famila Nordost, Bartels-Langness is the first retailer to use Shopreme’s new, convertible shopping trolleys. “Our customers expect us to offer innovative and exciting solutions at the POS. We are always looking for new ways to offer our customers an impressive shopping experience with targeted touchpoints, even in the digital world,” says Florian Behrens, CIO at Bartels-Langness. His goal is to establish a low-investment solution platform in the self-scanning environment and expand it with many new, advanced services.
