Alnatura rolls out bespoke self-checkouts from Ergonomic Solutions

Alnatura has started to equip its stores with self-checkouts. The German organic supermarket operator opted for a customised solution from Ergonomic Solutions. The British Supplier of mounting solutions for POS technology tailored its Space Pole SCO kiosk system specifically to the needs of Alnatura.

For Alnatura, it was crucial that the self-service checkouts could be incorporated into different store layouts and workflows. In each case, two SCOs replace one traditional checkout. At least one attended checkout remains in each store.

Following a successful pilot project at its store in Mannheim, Alnatura extended the test phase to a further eight stores, including those in Mainz and Frankfurt. Since beginning of the rollout, 12 stores have now been equipped with the Space Pole systems. The company explained to the Retail Optimiser that further expansion will depend on customer frequency, feedback and local conditions.

Existing POS hardware remains in place

The checkout furniture is designed to accommodate the current NCR POS systems. Existing peripherals such as desktop scanners, scales, printers and payment terminals can also continue to be used. The manufacturer has extended the peripheral arm of the Space Pole kiosk so that larger screens can be mounted in future.

Its SCO kiosks are painted in Alnatura’s corporate colour. The design is based on that of the retailer’s attended checkout counters. The company wished to create a standardised and visually appealing shopping environment. To improve accessibility, the unit for scanner and scale was positioned higher. This shall facilitate better access for wheelchairs and increase user-friendliness.

Simplified maintenance

Backplate and front cover of the kiosks are equipped with quick-release systems. This makes it easier to maintain installed hardware and to replace or upgrade the devices. Installation and maintenance of the self-service checkouts will be carried out by the same team that is responsible for the cash registers. In this way, Alnatura aims to reduce costs and keep processes lean.
