Auchan deploys trackable pallets from IBM

French retailer Auchan is accelerating its supply chain modernisation with the deployment of 50,000 IBM Smart Green Pallets across its national logistics network. The aim is to deliver real-time visibility across the supply chain while reinforcing Auchan’s wider environmental commitments. The decision follows a successful pilot of 10,000 connected pallets operating between two warehouses and four stores.

Designed by IBM Consulting, each pallet is made from recycled and recyclable plastic, features a GS1 barcode, battery-powered IoT sensors and associated to a private blockchain. The latter captures live data such as location, temperature and shock exposure. By tracking every event along the chain, Auchan seeks to enhance product safety, particularly for temperature-sensitive goods. When Smart Green Pallets detect conditions that may compromise product quality, automatic alerts enable swift corrective action, strengthening coordination between manufacturers, carriers, logistics teams and stores.

In addition to operational gains, Auchan’s teams benefit from easier handling. They are one-third lighter than traditional wooden models which would reduce manual strain and transport-related fuel consumption. Their enhanced durability further improves cost efficiency over the long term. Alex Bauer, General Manager of IBM Consulting France, notes that “this innovation optimises the use of logistics assets and delivers a very short return on investment, easing adoption across the supply chain.”

Part of Auchan’s environmental commitment

A number of actors across the supply chain have been involved in the conception of the IBM Smart Green Pallet, from suppliers to transporters and retailers. Beyond Auchan, other French retailers such Carrefour and Picard took part of the first phases of the project. That being said, the cost of recycled plastic pallets as well as their embedded electronic components is a major hindering to the roll out of the technology. The investment is nonetheless relevant for companies needing traceability and supply chain visibility, combined with sustainability goals.

The Smart Green Pallets rollout is presented as part of Auchan’s pledged to cut emissions from upstream and downstream activities by 25 per cent by 2030. Last but not least, their preventive monitoring capabilities also support the reduction of food waste.
