PAC 2000A Conad automates new DC with System Logistics
The largest regional member of Italian cooperative retailer Conad, PAC 2000A Conad, selected System Logistics to expand and modernise its logistics capabilities across southern Italy. It completed a new distribution centre, in Montalto Uffugo, Calabria, at the end of last year. The solution vendor for intralogistics, material flow and inventory management System Logistics has been part of Germany-based Krones Group since 2016.
The project focused on a high-density automated storage system designed to maximise pallet capacity while operating in one of the most seismically prone regions in Europe. The solution selected comprises a five-level automated warehouse with multi-deep racking, 16 pallets deep each side. This configuration provided space to store 6,400 pallets of high rotation items on a compact 2,600 square metres footprint.
Inbound pallets are brought by conveyor lines, before undergoing automated checks for weight, dimensions and integrity. They finally enter storage levels through single column elevators, both inbound and outbound, feeding the picking and shipping areas. Battery-powered shuttle vehicles handle pallet movements within the storage aisles.
Warehouse control is managed through System Logistics’ Systore warehouse management and control software, which coordinates shuttle and lift operations while providing product traceability and inventory management. The installation is designed to be modular to support future expansion should operational requirements increase.
System Logistics previously worked with another member of the cooperative, Conad Nord Ovest, which commissioned of a fully automated system for fruit and vegetable picking, one of the first of its kind in the country.
