Thomann ensures a good atmosphere with Condair
Thomann is equipping all buildings on its campus with direct room humidification systems from specialist supplier Condair. The German music retailer uses controlled humidity to protect its valuable instruments and ensure well-being and comfort of its customers and employees.
Since its founding in 1954, the family-owned company has grown from a small music store to the world’s largest e-commerce provider of instruments and music equipment. Thomann campus at the company’s headquarters in Treppendorf near Bamberg, Bavaria, is home to administration, a call center, specialized master workshops, and Europe’s largest music store.
The company is expanding the store from its current 6,400 square meters to a sales area of over 12,000 square meters. Upon completion in 2026, it will be the world’s largest music retail store. The company is already planning additional direct room humidification for its new customer experience areas.
Humidity protects valuable instruments
Wooden musical instruments can be damaged by unfavourable environmental conditions. String instruments such as violins and guitars are particularly sensitive to dry air. Without regulated humidity, they are at risk of cracking, warping, or losing quality of their sound. Wooden components of wind instruments, such as mouthpiece reeds, also require appropriate conditions. The optimal humidity for string and wind instruments varies, ranging from 40 to 50 percent or 35 to 40 percent, respectively.
Product presentation in the sales rooms also benefits from air humidification. Florian Rittweger, sales manager at Thomann, explains: “Sufficient humidity binds dust, and clean surfaces increase the attractiveness of the showroom.” This helps to keep sales areas visually appealing. A fresh indoor climate invites customers to linger.
Humidifiers create pleasant conditions
The company also wants to create a pleasant and healthy working environment for its employees. Controlled humidity can contribute to this. That is why Thomann has continuously expanded air humidification in its administration, call center, and customer service departments.
Thomann uses direct room humidification systems from global market leader Condair, based in Norderstedt near Hamburg. The solution uses small high-pressure nozzles that convert water into a micro-fine spray at up to 70 bar. This is barely visible and is immediately absorbed by the air in the room. In this way, the system ensures a uniform increase in humidity.
Flexibly adjustable
Hygrometers constantly measure humidity in the room. If it falls below the set value, humidification is automatically activated until the desired condition is reached again. Humidity values can be flexibly adjusted for each room individually or by zone.
An upstream, multi-stage water treatment system demineralizes the water and completely removes germs. The system is installed in small transportable containers, which the manufacturer replaces with cleaned systems every six months as part of a regular service.
