Walmart facilitates product searches for shoppers with Vusion Labels

Walmart has launched a new shopper app feature called ‘Flash Price Tag’ for customers of selected US stores. Using the US retail giant’s app, customers can activate the LED on the electronic shelf price label of an item they are looking for. Walmart aims to have all its US stores fitted with Vusion’s innovative Edgesense shelf solution by the end of this year. Technically, this Vusion technology uses Bluetooth Low Energy to connect the electronic shelf price labels in an energy-efficient manner and to control functions such as the targeted illumination of the LED.

Walmart has not yet issued an official statement regarding ‘Flash Price Tag’, but staff and customers are reporting on it on social media channels. To use the new feature, shoppers open the product page for the desired item in the app’s ‘Store Mode’. The app first displays the aisle and shelf section on a store map. If the user then taps ‘Flash Price Tag’, the corresponding Vusion label flashes in cyan for around ten seconds.

Walmart initially introduced the lighting function for its staff. Stock to Light shows them the shelf location for goods to be stocked, whilst Pick to Light guides them to the correct product when picking online orders. With ‘Flash Price Tag’, the retailer has now made this technical foundation available to shoppers as well.

Vusion connects the app and the shelf

The technology behind this comes from Vusion. The technology provider, which at the time was still operating under the name SES Imagotag, announced in April 2023 that it had signed a multi-year contract with Walmart to roll out its innovative Edgesense platform at the world’s largest brick-and-mortar retailer.

Walmart aims to have all of its approximately 4,600 US stores equipped with Vusion labels by the end of this year. By March 2026, Walmart had already fitted around 2,300 US sites with digital shelf price labels. However, Flash Price Tag is not currently available automatically in every store with electronic labels: a Walmart employee lists around 1,600 participating branches on LinkedIn for the new shopper feature.

The app displays the feature in-store

Flash Price Tag only appears in the Walmart app at a participating US store and for a compatible linked item. To use it, the shopper must be physically in the store and grant the app access to their location. Walmart has not yet announced when Flash Price Tag will be available to customers at every store.
