dm relies on reusable displays from Chep throughout Europe

dm Drogeriemarkt has started the Europe-wide roll-out of reusable secondary placement displays from pooling specialist Chep – following a successful pilot project for this solution in selected German stores. Germany’s leading drugstore chain is replacing single-use carton displays for a private label promotion with Chep’s Q+ Reusable system in over 2,100 German stores – and is also rolling out this solution in Austria, Italy, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania, the Czech Republic and Croatia.

Chep is supplying around 46,000 reusable display shelves for a current promotion of dm’s private label Sundance. dm is having these co-packed into 9,200 ready-to-use displays on the pooling service provider’s Q+ quarter pallets. The robust design of the reusable components significantly reduces transport damage. Chep’s patented blue click system enables the pre-assembled cardboard displays to be fixed quickly and without tools onto the quarter pallet.

Chep manufactures over 80 per cent of the modular, height-adjustable display shelves in its Q+ series from recycled plastic. The shelves can carry up to 35 kilograms and are easy to load – saving valuable handling time. At the end of the promotion, Chep brings the display shelves back to its pooling system together with the quarter pallets. The service provider cleans and checks the components before bringing them back into circulation.

Step by step to all markets

Dagmar Glatz, Head of Sustainability at dm, explains: “We are significantly reducing cardboard consumption and thus conserving resources – not only in Germany, but throughout Europe.” A life cycle analysis commissioned by Chep supports this statement. The study puts the reduction in waste from the reusable displays at 57 per cent compared to conventional cardboard solutions.

Chep considers itself well positioned thanks to its collaboration with dm Drogeriemarkt. Stephan Horstmann, Director Retail at Chep, explains: “With this promotion, we are demonstrating that our sustainable display solutions are fully ready for the market today.”

Rossmann establishes permanent displays with a standardised replenishment concept

dm Drogeriemarkt’s competitor Rossmann is not relying on Chep’s Q+ Reusable solution, but on a different sustainable display solution in its stores: the Burgwedel-based drugstore chain is replacing conventional disposable displays with a durable display system with an associated standardised goods flow solution. Rossmann has developed a concept for this with the consumer goods giants Unilever, Beiersdorf and Procter & Gamble, in which pre-assembled trays are inserted into flexible shelves with integrated price rails. Last year, Rossmann received the ECR Award from GS1 Germany for this project.
