Asda completes POS renewal with NCR Voyix

Asda has successfully completed the introduction of its new POS software from NCR Voyix. The British retailer has also replaced hardware components on a large scale – including touchscreens, which also come from NCR Voyix. Asda has upgraded the software at around 17,000 checkouts, replaced hardware components at around 6,000 of its tills and also introduced around 30,000 new hand scanners for customer self-scanning from Zebra.

The transition is part of the company’s mega IT transformation ‘Project Future’, with which the British retailer is replacing Walmart technology. By switching all checkouts, including self-scanning and self-checkouts, to a standardised solution from NCR Voyix, the British company has now reached a milestone. Asda had already previously relied on self-checkouts from NCR.

Asda had been a Walmart company until 2020 and was originally intended to be sold to Sainsbury’s. After the antitrust authorities prohibited the deal, the billionaire Issa family acquired a majority stake in the company together with TDR Capital.

Dominance of NCR Voyix on the UK market

Kevin Besford, Senior Director Retail Future at Asda, is very pleased with the transformation of the POS landscape: “It’s been a great collaboration between the business, technology and NCR teams to get this done.” With the selection of NCR Voyix, Asda has followed its competitors Tesco and Sainsbury’s, whose POS software solution from former Israeli POS software specialist Retalix was acquired and further developed by NCR in 2020.

While Asda is generally focussing on replacing Walmart technology, the company has opted for the ‘Store Assist’ solution from Walmart Commerce Technologies for online picking from stores. Asda has now also completed the introduction of this solution. All 534 stores in which Asda picks online orders are now working with the solution, which Walmart developed itself in the USA. As reported by The Retail Optimiser, the British Co-op community is also introducing the solution for the delivery of goods via Quick Service providers.
