Aldi Nord is testing a modified self-checkout strategy at three stores in Germany. Similar to its competitor Lidl, the discounter is using GK's software consistently for both manned checkouts and self-checkouts. The discounter also uses the same hardware components in the checkout lanes as at the self-checkouts. The counter for the current self-checkout prototype is supplied by shopfitting specialist Kesseböhmer.

After years of testing different systems and processes in Portugal, the UK, France and the Netherlands, Lidl has now apparently found its way forward for Scan&Go: self-scanning is coming to Europe as a feature of Lidl Plus, the discounter's loyalty app.

Self-checkout technology continues to grow in the retail sector. According to the latest report from RBR Data Services, now part of Datos Insights, more than 217,000 self-checkout devices were delivered worldwide last year.

While Lidl has already implemented the new self-checkouts throughout Romania, the major roll-out in Germany, as well as in other countries such as Spain and Italy, will apparently start in Lidl's next financial year, which begins in March and ends in February 2025.

According to the latest report by RBR Data Services, now part of Datos Insights, nearly 200,000 self-checkout devices were shipped worldwide last year. By 2028, the analysts expect the number of global installations to exceed 1.9 million. NCR remains the largest player in the market with one-third of the shipments – and even increased its market share by one percentage…

Following many years of cooperation, Dutch instore technology provider Pan Oston has taken over all shares of Swiss POS hardware specialist 4POS AG as of 1 December 2022. Both companies will nevertheless continue to serve the European market under their own brands and with their respective employees.

Lekkerland, in cooperation with energy supplier ENBW, opened the first fully automated unmanned container store named Rewe Ready end of September. The autonomous grocery store of the Rewe Group subsidiary is located at the EnBW fast charging park for electrical cars in Bispingen, Lower Saxony. The store's technology originates from Paderborn-based company Latebird.

Lidl is now also introducing self-checkouts in Germany. With Swiss hardware specialist 4POS and its software supplier GK, Lidl is embarking on a platform strategy using the same standard components as at its attended checkouts. In the Upper Franconian village of Pettstadt, Rewe Markt GmbH is piloting Josefs Nahkauf Box, a retail format with around 700 items for daily needs. On an area of 39 square metres, customers can independently scan goods at a self-checkout from 4POS and pay by debit or credit card seven days a week, around the clock.
