Thalia optimises supply chain with Relex

Book retailer Thalia has opted for the forecasting and replenishment solutions from Relex to optimise its supply chain processes. The move is set to help make processes more efficient and improve availability of goods in the retailer’s bookstores and distribution centres. Implementation is being supported by consulting firm Capgemini. The consultancy house contributes its extensive experience in the transformation of merchandise management processes to numerous Relex projects in the retail sector.

Thalia operates more than 500 bookstores and online shops in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The company pursues an omni-channel strategy with the aim of intelligently linking its brick-and-mortar business and online retail. Customers can use digital services such as the Thalia app, self-checkouts or pick-up stations for ordered goods. The Retail Optimiser reported.

The introduction of the Relex platform is a key component of Thalia’s Log25 transformation programme, with which the group is realigning its supply chain and logistics. From automation of processes with Relex, the company expects to gain deeper insights into its supply chain to serve diverse customer needs in a more targeted manner. ”This way, we ensure that our extensive range is always available in our bookstores and online,“ explains Marco Rebohm, Managing Director Supply Chain & Logistics at Thalia.

AI improves accuracy of forecasts

To improve availability of books and merchandise, Relex’sforecasting and replenishment software utilises artificial intelligence. The platform uses machine learning to identify patterns and trends from available data. It identifies optimal stock levels for each book and individual item with a high degree of accuracy. This helps to minimise the risk for out-of-stocks, especially for trend items.

By automating planning and ordering processes, workflows can be organised more efficiently. This takes the pressure off employees and gives them more time for customer service.
