Edeka Paschmann enhances self-checkouts against fraud with Diebold Nixdorf and SeeChange
Independent Edeka retailer Paschmann from the Rhine-Ruhr region has equipped its self-checkouts in a first store with Diebold Nixdorf’s Vision Recognition solution to prevent fraud. Its supermarket on Suitbertusstraße in Düsseldorf is the first store in Germany to use Diebold Nixdorf’s Vynamic Smart Vision Shrink Reduction solution, which was originally developed by British start-up SeeChange.
In future, Edeka Paschmann also plans to use the solution for the automatic recognition of fruit and vegetables. Edeka retailer Johannes Ruf is already doing this in one of his new Beckesepp stores, as reported by Retail Optimiser.
schmann has now introduced addresses handling errors at the self-service checkout – both unintentional and deliberate – and thus offers retailers protection against the most common causes of loss in the self-checkout area. In addition, the systems are equipped with Diebold Nixdorf’s automatic, AI-based age verification.
More accurate and faster at self-checkouts
“With Diebold Nixdorf’s Smart Vision technology, we are making the self-service area even more attractive, as we give our customers the assurance that all transactions are carried out correctly and, in the case of age-restricted goods, more quickly,” explains Falk Paschmann, Managing Director of Edeka Paschmann.
French retail group Les Mousquetaires was the first company to introduce Diebold Nixdorf’s fraud prevention software at the self-service checkouts in its full-range Intermarché banner operation. The decision to implement the system was made after a successful test phase at the Intermarché supermarket in the French municipality of La Farlède, which is operated by Laurent Hugou, President of Stime, the IT company of Les Mousquetaires. The Retail Optimiser reported.
Real-time monitoring
The solution, developed by Manchester-based start-up SeeChange and distributed and integrated by Diebold Nixdorf, analyses customer behaviour and activities in real time using cameras. If the system detects a failed scan or incorrect operation, customers receive a message on the self-service checkout display indicating that an item has not been scanned correctly.
The scanning process can then be repeated without any major interruption to the checkout process. Only if the system displays another error message will employees be informed and, if necessary, assist in completing the checkout process correctly. Short video sequences of the anomaly detected by the system help to illustrate the process to the customer and explain how certain operating errors can be avoided in future.
Automatic age verification
Edeka Paschmann uses another AI-based solution from Diebold Nixdorf: Vynamic Smart Vision Age Verification. This enables automatic age verification when purchasing age-restricted items, such as alcoholic beverages. When such an item is scanned, a query is triggered to ask whether automatic age recognition is desired.
If consent is given, the facial features of the person in question are analysed using a camera installed on the system and sophisticated AI algorithms to determine their age. If this value exceeds a predefined threshold, the transaction can continue. If the value is below the threshold, a check is carried out by staff. If customers do not want automatic age recognition, they can also have their age checked by staff. By using this solution, staff have more time for more important tasks such as service or ensuring the availability of goods.
