Auchan’s Alcampo installs digital labels from Hanshow
Alcampo has selected Chinese manufacturer Hanshow for a companywide rollout of digital price labels. Auchan Group’s Spanish subsidiary plans to equip all its 507 supermarkets and hypermarkets with ESLs. Before end of this year, it aims to roll out a total of 560,000 labels across 84 of its supermarkets.
The digital tags are set to be used for both dry goods and fresh produce. For frozen products, Hanshow has developed special ESLs designed to function at low temperatures. At its service counters, Auchan plans to install large-format displays.
Alcampo is not the first grocery retailer in Spain that rolls out ESLs. Competitor Eroski decided to equip its hypermarkets and larger supermarkets with technology from Vusion. The Retail Optimiser reported. And El Jamón, a retail company operating in Andalusia, commissioned Hanshaw last month to install nearly three million labels.
Aimed to further reduce resource consumption
For Alcampo, the introduction of electronic shelf labels represents a significant step in transformation and digitalisation of its stores. Eduardo Latorre, Director of Commercial Concepts, Franchises and Technical Operations at Alcampo, expects the measure to deliver progress in three key areas: “reducing paper consumption, making in-store processes more efficient, and allowing our teams to dedicate more time to what really matters: serving our customers.”
The company expects the usage of ESLs to save more than 1,800 kilometres of paper strips annually for price labelling, which is set to reduce CO₂ emissions by approximately 8.4 tonnes. This will help Alcampo in its efforts to lower resource consumption. The retailer states that it has already reduced its paper consumption by 6,700 tonnes per year since 2017.
More time for value-adding tasks
Furthermore, the solution offers a digital platform for in-store communication. This can be managed centrally and helps to ensure that price and product information will be displayed accurately and consistently across all sales channels. Automating price updates frees staff from routine tasks, allowing them to devote more time to value-adding activities and customer service.
