Hema chooses Nedap for RFID-based inventory management

Dutch non-food specialist Hema is implementing the cloud-based RFID platform from Nedap. The aim is to optimise the retailer’s inventory management. By mid-2026 the solution is planned to be rolled out in 740 stores in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Germany and Austria. Customers will be able to check the availability of specific products in real time via the app or website.

With RFID tagging initially applied to apparel items, the deployment will allow the retailer to significantly enhance its stock accuracy and visibility at store-level. Hema has informed The Retail Optimiser that RFID will not be used for loss prevention purposes and will not be integrated into self-checkouts or other POS systems at this stage. Similarly, customer interaction with RFID-enabled data will remain digital-only, via the Hema app and website, with no in-store touchpoints currently planned.

Hema has confirmed to The Retail Optimiser that RFID tags will be applied at the source, directly in the factories, ensuring that items can be tracked from production through to the stores. Store staff will benefit from improved operational efficiency, with faster and more reliable stock counts enabling more effective replenishment and less time spent on manual checks.

RFID technology established in textile retail

Hema selected Nedap based on its extensive experience in large-scale RFID rollouts across multiple countries. In December 2023, sportwear specialist On chose Nedap’s iD Cloud platform to optimise processes in its factories, warehouses, distribution centres and On’s own stores, as reported by The Retail Optimiser.

In fashion retail, companies such as Adidas, C&A, Calzedonia, H&M, Inditex, Prada and Tommy Hilfiger also rely on RFID technology throughout the supply chain and for goods security. The technology gives companies a complete view of all movements of goods in production, logistics and points of sale at all times.
