Edeka's Netto Marken-Discount was able to secure two prizes at EHI's Reta Awards 2022, the winners of which were announced today. The teams around Netto CIO Claus Leitl won firstly with their Pick&Go branch in Munich's Schwabing district. They won a second prize together with Tiliter for the automatic recognition of products without barcodes such as fruit and vegetables.

German retailers see the greatest need for action in the use of mobile devices with checkout functions as well as self-checkouts and self-scanning systems. This is the result of EHI’s study POS Systems 2022. Overall, the number of cash registers used in retail is continuously decreasing. At the same time, systems are faced with growing tasks.

In its E-Center Gundelfingen, the Edeka regional co-operative Südwest is piloting intelligent shopping trolleys from Kaufungen-based start-up KBST. The retailer is currently testing customer acceptance with 20 of the systems called Smart Shopper.

Edeka Nord is the first retail company in Germany to offer its customers digital receipts without the need for the shoppers to identify themselves. Who stands behind the solution reveals the server site on which the receipt is provided: It is the cloud solution eMailBon from GK Software.

The grocery retail industry sees an massive increase in number of companies offering self-scanning with mobile devices. According to a study by Retail Banking Research (RBR), retailers already offer their customers in 32,000 sales outlets worldwide to scan items as they shop. In 80 percent of those stores, shoppers can scan with their own smartphones.

Since January 2020, retailers and restaurants in Germany have been legally obliged to issue receipts, a major annoyance for the industry. Digital receipts are a way to avoid the additional burden on the environment.

Kaufland customers can cash in surplus coins for vouchers at Coinstar machines. A growing number of Edeka and Rewe stores is also offering the service.

A nine-member independent jury has selected this year's winners of the Reta Awards on behalf of the EHI Retail Institute. Winners in five categories include retail companies such as E.Leclerc, Edeka, Fressnapf, Ikea, Rewe, Salling Group and Tegut.

In the first fully automated 24/7 store of Edeka Südwest at the railway station in Renningen, a robotics system from the Stuttgart start-up Smark picks the goods from the back area.

When selling animal products, retailers inform their customers increasingly about origin and husbandry. A rapidly growing number of independent Edeka and Rewe shop owners are going one step further. With Tierwohl-TV, they show live streams from their suppliers' stables and outdoor livestock areas.
