Kroger is testing smart shopping carts from New York start-up Caper. Retailers around the world are increasingly testing computerised shopping carts, from a wide variety of providers.

Edeka merchant Stefan Popp is the first retailer to use the technology of Israeli Bizerba partner Supersmart in Germany. In his E-Center in Würzburg, Popp has had the intelligent validation of self-scanning by its customers installed not only for the verification of items in shopping trolleys but also for those in shopping baskets.

In Germany, Rewe Group has equipped a first Penny store in Eching with SmartFix from Wanzl. The Smartphone holder at the shopping trolley secures customers’ devices during shopping. Edeka stores will also install the system.

Whether they like it or not: German grocery retailers cannot avoid e-commerce. Amazon is not letting up. For the likes of Edeka, Rewe and Schwarz Group, it is worth looking at the French market. Through innovative concepts and investments into technology, companies such as Groupe Casino and E.Leclerc are confidently securing their business against Amazon.

With Edeka's Netto, another German discounter is testing self-scanning with customers' smartphones. The team of IT Managing Director Claus Leitl deliberately relies on a proprietary development that is fully integrated into Netto's customer app.

With immediate effect, both retail companies and their technology partners can submit applications for Reta Europe 2021.
