Kaufland tests new generation of Tomra’s multi-feed machines

Kaufland is significantly expanding its test run with Tomra’s R2 multi-feed reverse vending machines. For the first time, Schwarz Group’s large-scale discounter is also piloting the latest generation of the system, which allows shoppers to return glass packaging together with PET bottles and cans – unsorted in one go.

Kaufland relies on the so-called Crystal version of the Norwegian specialist in the field of reverse vending in selected stores. The retail company will take a close look at whether the machine proves successful in continuous operation with the sensitive material glass.

Tomra has equipped the Crystal version of its wall-mounted multi-feed reverse vending machine with new sensor technology. According to the manufacturer, the system is able to precisely detect and reliably process even highly reflective or translucent materials such as glass in combination with other types of packaging. In the current pilot, Kaufland will take a close look at whether Tomra’s multi-feed Crystal-technology passes the practical test in tough everyday store conditions.

Multi-feed technology on the rise

Kaufland is testing Tomra’s multi-feed reverse vending machines, particularly at locations where customers return large quantities of empties. Following an initial test of the R2 version without glass acceptance in Steinheim in the German federal state of Baden-Württemberg, the retail company is now also piloting the Crystal version of the system in Dortmund, Ludwigsburg, Worms, Ahrensfelde and, from mid-May, also in Leipzig.

“The machine is ideal, especially for customers with larger quantities of returnables, because it makes the process much quicker and easier for them,” explains Florian Hermanski, responsible for reverse vending systems at Kaufland Germany. “The concept has not only convinced us, but above all our customers in Steinheim, so we have decided to expand it to other locations.”

Tests also in Edeka and Rewe worlds

In addition to Kaufland, numerous other well-known retailers in Germany also rely on Tomra’s multi-feed technology. In the Edeka community, some operations and the group’s discount subsidiary Netto are testing the reverse vending machines of that type at selected locations. As reported by the Retail Optimiser, Edeka Trinkgut Gerdes and Edeka Meyer’s Frischecenter in northern Germany are among those piloting the multi-feed machines for accepting returnables. Rewe Group and its discount subsidiary Penny have also put such systems into operation. Globus is also testing Tomra’s technology.
