Austrian Spar today launched an app that allows customers to use complex sales promotions in its stores without registering by name with the retailer.

In the Netherlands, Aldi Nord will open a first store this week offering shoppers the option to scan their purchases with their smartphone or at a self-checkout. Not only the software, but also the hardware for the self-checkouts will be provided by Austrian specialist Shopreme.

Convenience store operator Valora is piloting electronic shelf labels that do not require batteries.  The ESLs from Instore Solutions, called Green Tag, are set to reduce environmental impact as well as follow-up costs for retailers. In the Upper Franconian village of Pettstadt, Rewe Markt GmbH is piloting Josefs Nahkauf Box, a retail format with around 700 items for daily needs. On an area of 39 square metres, customers can independently scan goods at a self-checkout from 4POS and pay by debit or credit card seven days a week, around the clock.

Penny is gradually rolling out Scan & Go with the technology from Shopreme to all its 2,150 discount stores in Germany. Customers can already conveniently use self-scanning and payment via smartphone at 160 locations.

Nutri-Score based on the French model comes to Germany. The commitment of major German retailers to use the nutritional label on their private-label products increases the pressure on brand manufacturers. In France, retail primus E.Leclerc is a pioneer.

In Germany, Rewe Group has equipped a first Penny store in Eching with SmartFix from Wanzl. The Smartphone holder at the shopping trolley secures customers’ devices during shopping. Edeka stores will also install the system.

Rewe Group's discounter Penny has opened a first experience store on sustainability with digital touchpoints from Swiss software house Instore Solutions.

With Edeka's Netto, another German discounter is testing self-scanning with customers' smartphones. The team of IT Managing Director Claus Leitl deliberately relies on a proprietary development that is fully integrated into Netto's customer app.

After initial tests in two stores in Cologne and Marburg last year, Rewe Group's discounter Penny is starting the roll-out of its mobile scanning solution in an initial 111 stores in the coming weeks.
