Rewe subsidiary Lekkerland today put an autonomous container store with technology from AiFi into operation on its own premises in Frechen. One for all shoppers is to follow soon.

For the 16th time, EHI Retail Institute this week announced the winners of the Retail Technology Awards Reta. In the Upper Franconian village of Pettstadt, Rewe Markt GmbH is piloting Josefs Nahkauf Box, a retail format with around 700 items for daily needs. On an area of 39 square metres, customers can independently scan goods at a self-checkout from 4POS and pay by debit or credit card seven days a week, around the clock.

Convenience wholesaler Lekkerland, which is part of Rewe Group, plans to launch several different types of unmanned vending boxes under its Rewe To Go banner operation. In High Road of London’s borough of Greenwich, Aldi UK's just-walk-out pilot store has opened for the public this week. Previously, only staff have been able to test the discounter's high-tech store, as reported by Retail Optimiser. In this store, shoppers do not have to scan their purchases or go through a checkout.

Aldi Süd has launched a just-walk-out store in London on a trial basis. The technology comes most likely from Californian specialist AiFi, with whom Aldi Süd has been testing for several months.

Dutch start-up Wundermart is equipping its unattended convenience stores with computer vision technology from AiFi. The AI-based solution Oasis from the US specialist enables customers to shop without the need to scan the goods.
