Stratacache crisis triggers uncertainty in the retail industry
The crisis at Stratacache is causing unease in the retail media market. Since 5 May 2026, two UK subsidiaries of the US retail media group, Stratacache UK and PRN UK, have been subject to insolvency and liquidation proceedings. Along with its subsidiaries – including Scala, PRN and Walkbase – Stratacache is one of the major international platform providers for in-store communication, audience measurement and retail media.
Currys and Iceland Foods are particularly affected by the UK liquidation proceedings. Both retailers have only recently expanded their in-store media and digital signage networks with companies from Stratacache group.
Currys has expanded its in-store retail media offering with PRN to 297 stores in the UK and Ireland. Iceland and its banner operation The Food Warehouse are using Stratacache systems for digital signage, content management and audience measurement in 766 stores. The problems go beyond the UK
The British cases are not isolated. Stratacache confirmed redundancies in March, citing tariffs, rising component prices and supply chain pressures as reasons. Furthermore, the former subsidiary X2O Media in Canada filed for bankruptcy at the end of March 2026.
The court documents reveal that X2O Media had required financial support from its parent company for years. This adds to the evidence of broader financial difficulties within the Stratacache group. This is relevant for the retail sector because retail media and digital signage networks are planned for the long term and are closely linked to operations, service and marketing.
Impact on PRN and Scala
PRN and Scala are subsidiaries of Stratacache. The group acquired PRN in July 2015, at that time still under the name IZ-ON Media. Scala has been part of Stratacache since August 2016. Consequently, the crisis could also affect other companies that play a key role in retail media and digital signage projects within the retail sector.
For Scala’s customers, however, the situation does not automatically mean an immediate disruption to operations as things stand. The Stratacache companies are not necessarily affected by developments in the UK. Nevertheless, many retailers are now likely to be looking more closely at support structures, hosting, maintenance, spare parts supply and contractual responsibilities.
Hunkemöller and Kiehl’s work with Scala
However, the issue is also a sensitive one for Scala’s customers. Scala’s customers include Hunkemöller, Kiehl’s, Carrefour Belgium and Mobilcom-Debitel. In Germany, Scala expanded its German team in 2024 and would be further strengthened in Germany as a service and integration provider through Stratacache following the acquisition of MasterPoint.
